Botanical info: 

Violet is a small hardy herbaceous perennial growing to 0.2 m tall by 0.4 m spread. Having no stem, the flowers and leaves rise directly from long, horizontal, runners. It has edible flowers and a sweet, perfumed flavor.  The fragrance of violet is regarded as one of the most beautiful aromas in the plant kingdom. It grows naturally in dump positions in forest clearings. Its native to Europe and north Africa. Flowering from March to April and sporadically in late summer.  


Hippocratic legacy: 

    a. In Nature of Women:

        a. The seed of violet is recommended for the abortion of a dead embryo and the placenta. 

    b. In Diseases of Women 1: 

        a. Is recommended for eyes diseases. 

    c. In Diseases of Women 2:

        a. Violets flowers are used in enema preparations. 


Other uses:

Both the leaves and flowers are edible.  They can be candied or eaten fresh.  Both leaves and flowers can be added to salads and used to embellish desserts and iced drinks.  Leaves can be cooked like spinach. The sweet scent of this flower been used in the production of many cosmetic fragrances and perfumes. The French are also known for their violet syrup, made from an extract of violets. In herbal medicine, violet has been used for a variety of respiratory ailments, and skin disorders.
